Showing daily active users (DAU)

Showing user activity over a specific time range is a basic query that can often be the starting point for more in-depth data explorations.

Goal

This article demonstrates how to determine the number of users that were active on each day, over a set period of time.

Show the number of users active each day

Since we're measuring user activity over time, we will build the sentence for this query using Time view.

This example uses the IA_MOVIES dataset, its useractor property, and Daily Activity actor property. You would select the appropriate properties for your dataset.

Prerequisites

This query uses a custom actor property for Daily Activity. For information on how to create a custom actor property for this query, see Building a Daily Activity actor property.

Building the Query

We use the IA_MOVIES dataset for our example in the following procedure. Use the dataset that is appropriate for your business. To create the custom actor property used in this query, see Building a Daily Activity actor property.

To show the daily activity of users, do the following:
  1. In the left menu bar, click Explore.
  2. In the upper left corner of the window, select the dataset. In our example, we chose IA_MOVIES.
  3. In the first line of the query builder, select Show count unique user actors.
  4. In the second line of the query builder, select: Filtered to user actors with Daily Activity that is greater than 0.
