Create an event property

Every logged event includes fields for timestamp and actor. There can be other properties associated with the event as well, such as location, type of item purchased, or any other attribute, column, or field that describes the event. This includes raw properties and user defined properties.

You can use event properties in queries to summarize, group by, and filter on reusable expressions that can be direct references to physical data columns, references to values derived from lookups, or logical expressions evaluating multiple physical columns. This article describes how to define a new event property.

Defining an event property

This section demonstrates how to create an event property, in which you specify a definition and function.

  • You must specify at least one value for a defined value event property, and optionally a value to assign, if the event property definition does not return any results. 
  • To create a function for an event property, specify the actor or context used to evaluate the value, as well as the mathematical operator to perform (add, subtract, multiply, or divide).
To create an event property, do the following:
  1. Select a dataset from the drop-down list in the upper left corner. Your dataset options will be for your company data. In our example, we chose the IA_MOVIES dataset.
  2. From the Explore page, click the Events icon in the left navigation bar.


  1. Click New Event Property in the upper right corner of the window.


  1. Enter a unique Name at the top of the window to describe the property. We named our example property Purchase Movie.
  2. In the Defined Value tab (active by default), enter a value for the property, usually the number of events associated with the property. For our example, we entered a value of 1.


  1. Select the appropriate options for the property from the drop-down lists. We chose events with action that matches purchase_movie.


  1. Optional: You can specify multiple values for an event property, by clicking the or ... and conditions and selecting the appropriate options, as necessary. Hover the cursor over the + sign to add an or condition.
  2. You can accept to filter to all events like we did, or select another option from the drop-down list. 


  1. Optional: To apply a mathematical process, click the Function tab, select the appropriate options from the drop-down lists, then accept Filtered to all events or select an option from the drop-down list. In our example, selected  timestamp then filtered to all events, so we'd know when each movie was purchase.


  1. Click Save in the upper right corner of the page, then click GO at the bottom left corner to run the query.
