Measuring daily active users (DAU)

Question

During the past seven days, how many users were active on each day?

Overview

This is a basic query in Interana: measuring user activity over a specific time range. This sort of query is often the starting point for more in-depth explorations of your data.

Building the query

Because we're measuring user activity over time, use a Time view for this query. Then select the time range (1 week ago to now), and Count Unique users as a measure (select the column that represents your actors).

You can hover over any point to see the count of users for that day:

Tip: adjusting the resolution

Use the chart controls to change the resolution of the chart (the number of points displayed on the line).

Instead of showing the number of users every day, which shows you the overall trend for the week, you can adjust the controls to show more granular units of time. For example, you can change the resolution to show the number of users per hour:

The chart will show more peaks and valleys, but you can drill down and see how user activity varies across smaller units of time (does activity rise in the morning and drop later in the day, as expected, or is there a more unusual activity pattern?).
