The Interana Activity Measure is a great way to understand trending activity within your data set by providing a general assessment of active users (or other entities) within a specific time window. For speed and compute efficiency, the default behavior is not a full count of all active entities within the window, rather the trajectory of behaviors.

Overview of activity measures

The Activity Measure will identify a segment of entities and provide a count of time units in which they have been active within a larger time window on a daily basis.  This makes it a rolling calculation.  In our example, we will count the number of days a user has been active within a week timeframe.  This will give us the user's activity level on a daily basis for the last week ending that day.

For a given day (e.g., today), we will pull the segment of all users active on that day, then count the number of days in which they have had any activity within the past week (7 days, including today).

Example of using Activity Measures

Interana measures the number of days that each user was active over the period of measurement ending that day. In this example, the query will consider all users who were active on the day, then look back the period of measurement (7 days) to get the users' activity level. Interana will assign each user a count between 1 and 7 (users with no activity on the initial day, 0 usage on Saturday, are not included) for each day within this query (day 1 to day 7).

If I am a user, and I listened to music both today on Saturday, and three days ago on Wednesday, I would have a count of 2 on Saturday and a count of 1 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, because the the activity measure counts 7 days back from the day this calculation occurs.

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
User 1
event count = 2
      X     X
User 1
activity measure on each day
 0  0  0 1 1  1  2
User 2
event count = 2
      X X
User 2
activity measure on each day
 0  0  0 1 2  0  0

We can add filters to restrict the kinds of activity we want to register, but for this example let’s look at all activity.

The Activity Measure workflow

Use the following workflow when working with this analysis method:

  1. Create the metric, then open the Explorer tab.
  2. Configure the chart controls.
    1. Set the Resolution of the chart to 1 day
    2. Set the Time Window of the chart to 1 day (if it is not set automatically)
  3. Now analyze your data.
